Commissioner visit to Algeria

Algiers, 28 March 2018: The Commissioner for the Infrastructure and Energy at the African Union Commission H.E Dr. Amani Abou-Zeid, undertook a working visit to Algeria from 25-28 March 2018.
During her stay, the Commissioner met with the Energy Minister of Algeria, H.E Mr. Mustapha GUITOUNI, accompanied by his staff. They had a working session on energy in the continent and the development of the renewable energy especially on solar and wind as main issue to keep our environment and the electricity interconnection between the regions in the continent and with Europe and Asia. In addition to promoting the use of natural gas for the development of the industry in the continent through Trans-Saharan gas pipeline, approximately between Algeria, Niger and Nigeria. The Commissioner received from the Algerian Energy Minster a proposal of AFREC host agreement that was prepared by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At the end of the meeting the commissioner gave the Algerian Energy Minister the Trophy in the occasion of the celebration of AFREC ten-year anniversary.
The Commission was received by the Algerian Minister of Tourism H.E Mr. Hassen MARMOURI, and had fruitful exchanges of views on a number of issues of common interest and the importance of the tourism for the continent and the Minister was informed that the operationalization of the tourism file is new at the commission and the First African Tourism Conference will be organized in Zimbabwe on 13-14 May 2018.
The Commissioner was as well received by the Algerian Minister of Post and ICT H.E Dr. Houda-Imane FARAOUN and briefed her on DOT Africa and the importance of ICT for the continent, the Programme for Infrastructure Development of Africa (PIDA) the fiber optic link between Algeria, Niger and Nigeria.
The Commissioner visited the headquarters of the African Energy Commission (AFREC) that was established in 2008. She was briefed about what was done in 2017, the creation of the African Energy Efficiency Residential Sector, the planning for 2018 and the challenges by the Interim Executive Director. The commissioner was also informed about the African Energy Statistics that was launched in 2012 and published annually as one of the pillars of the African Energy Information System (AEIS).
The Interim Exertive Director of AFREC presented a Trophy to the commissioner in the occasion of the celebration of AFREC ten-year anniversary.
